Brewers Family, Sinoville, Pretoria

I love to be in the kitchen.  I love to cook and prep, and everything that’s not doing the washing up!  One thing I cannot deal with however, is making salads.  I don’t know why.  But I don’t.  Consequently I don’t eat them very often.

This is South Africa though.  Not only is the beef always amazing, but the salads are inventive and delicious!

We went off to Pretoria to visit with Mom, and of course, food had to be involved!

She drove us not far away to this random little strip mall, which had a Brewers Family restaurant.  It looked a bit dubious, but my experience at Thunder Gun had told me not to judge a book by it’s cover.

Yet again, my snobbery was unfounded.  What a lovely little place.

We had the sweetest server I’ve come across in a long time.  She was very new and a little nervous.  I think that also my accent makes things worse.  Not only is it exceptionally strong, but now you are speaking English to an English person.  I know how I feel when I use my one or two sentences of Afrikaans, and so my heart went out to this poor child!

Also, I am a nightmare for rearranging a menu.  This time was no exception.

I ordered their standard shredded chicken salad, which was shredded chicken, lettuce, grated carrots, grapes and strawberries, and other stuff I can’t now remember.  Then I wanted it not with the 1000 island dressing it comes with, but greek dressing on the side.  Then I decided I wanted the toppings from one of their gourmet salads added.

Yeah… I am that awkward customer!  Mom decided that sounded like a great idea and had the same.  Albert was still full from the night before so just ordered fries with cheese sauce and crumbled blue cheese.

Well, am I ever glad that this lovely girl understood what I meant.  It was one of the best salads I have ever had.  Ever.

I highly recommend going to Brewers Family in Sinoville if you’re in the area and, whilst apologising to the waiter, order the same.  You will not be disappointed in the absolute least!

Also, if someone could tell me what went into the original salad, I’d be very grateful… I want to make this again when I get home.  Yes, me.  The girl who doesn’t like making salads.  That should tell you how delicious it was!!
